When imagining the future, we tend to assume that the next few years will mirror the recent past. Change, though, has never been this linear. In our report, Food Choices in Flux: Scenarios-Four Alternative Futures of Food, we look at four shapes of change—constraint, collapse, growth, and transformation.
In the past century, the global food system has undergone all of these diverse forms of change. We've seen "constraint" in the form of World War II food rationing, "collapse" exemplified by the dust bowl of the 1930s, unencumbered "growth" of U.S. commodity crops, and a complete" transformation" of our relationship to food brought on by the advent of refrigeration. This report will take you through what each of these forms of change would look like in the future in Brazil, Europe, China, and North America.
